ALHOORA ALHADDADA: an urban village

Manama, capital city of Bahrain, in one of the first urban environments in the gulf countries. As researchers and historians say, this urban environment was founded from several villages that extended to be combined in one big city. However, many of these villages -which become neighborhoods in the city of Manama- kept having their own special community structures. A beautiful, rich social bonds and structures that created unusual spatial experience, defining what distinguishes Bahrain.

After the oil boom and the economic development in Bahrain late 80’s. All these neighborhoods started to change. Manama started to lose its local communities. Nowadays there are less than three neighborhoods -Urban villages- that exist in the city. Alhoora Alhaddada is one of these last urban villages. This publication comes to celebrate the history and community of Alhoora with the world.

URBAN JOURNEY: The Zine

With over 10 years of observing the city of Manama, the project identifies the relationship between the development of Manama city to the economical activities of its people. As a port city, Manama attracts various visitors that makeup the current social fabric, which developed its distinct urban shift from the coast to the inner city. The initial main activities were largely concentrated by the port. This significant entry port contributed to the different imports along the decades. After the 60s, the shift of activity due to manufacturing led to the development of Isa Town. This particular book uses three architectural monuments and public spaces as case studies to present two eras: The city of the port “Near the water” during 1880-1959 and The city of the dreams “away from the water” during 1960-2022. The project is a compilation analytical interpretation of the artist which includes writing, sketches and photography.
