“Every two decades, Manama reinvents itself. The old buildings go.”
In his series, Modernity, Jaafar Al-Haddad photographs the diversity of Manama’s iconic buildings. “Late Modernity reached Manama via architecture from the late 60s to the early 80s,” and in due time, these buildings will be demolished, and sleeker structures will be put in their place. The cityscape is ever-changing, subject to the whims of its occupants. “By end of the day, you’re talking about a city that was built by the community—not something someone did, and others discovered.”
