Mahmood Akbari believed in the importance of consistency in design, an element that influenced his approach in architectural design and construction. Both his philosophy and methodology were shaped by his personal interests, his views on the role of architecture in urban landscapes and his experience within the field. This resulted in a distinct and recognizable style that can be seen in all his projects.
In today’s practice, it is often considered simple to define the approach of a building’s design. But what set Mahmood’s work apart was his consistent style in his projects, evident in his design language, visually, spatially, and systematically. An element quite notable within his projects that stretch through the early stages of Modernism Architecture in the region, where there were few previous examples to draw from at the time, setting him as a pioneer and a visionary within his field. He managed the complexity of the design process by bounding himself to manipulating the realities of the industry, rather than experimenting with exemplary creations.
With a deep understanding of materials up his sleeve, he was able to profoundly re-define their limits both structurally and technically resulting in designs with clear experimentation in volumes while maintaining a unique spatial integrity. Aesthetically, Akbari’s designs are recognizable for order, repetition and a systems of elements, allowing them to be easily read and understood. This clarity of vision could be interpreted as a result of his practice through painting, as a way of thinking and observing.
