بين السنين تلبس المنامة حللاً جديدة، و تمسي بواجهة جديدة في كل حين، دونما أدلة أو آثار على سرعة التطور التي شهدته، سوى وثائق و أوراق قديمة –سنعود لذكرها في التدوينات القادمة-، شخصياً لا أرى البناء إلا واجهة لثقافة المجتمع فأُشكل على كل من يدرس أحدهما دون الآخر، و هنا تتجلى لك فكرة واضحة، إن مجتمع المنامة متطور بشكل سريع! فسابقًا كانت الأبواب و النوافذ –مخارج البيت- جميعها باللون الأزرق في بنية من الجدران البيضاء 1 ، أما اليوم فلا ترى فيها إلى أبنية خاوية المعنى، عادية الشكل، تأدي غرضها بأقل تكلفة، و تُحمّل البنية التحتة الخدمية مهمة أكبر، فأين أختفت هذه المباني البيضاء الجميلة؟

عندما سألت جدي (الحاج علي حسن الحداد) حول الموضوع، و هو أحد الأشخاص المهمين في سوق الحدادة –أحد أهم أسواق المنامة القديمة-، كان الحديث ينجر دائماً على أن النسق الذي بنيت به المنامة لم يتغير، أي أن هذه الأزقة، و هذه الطرق، هي ذاتها ما بدأت به المنامة من فجرها، ملكيات السوق، محلاته و مساحاته، هي ذاتها، غير أن الزمن ألح على الملاك بتجديد أو ترميم المباني، حيث يعود السبب في ذلك للسعي وراء مواد بناء أكثر اقتصادية مما يجعل البناء أقل مقاومة للزمن و متغيراته، الدليل على ذلك بهيّ في أكثر من مكان، حيث أنك مثلاً لازلت ترى بعض المنازل القديمة، التي كانت ملكاً لتجار السوق، بنوها بمواد ممتازة، لتبقى إلى اليوم شاهد على مكانتهم في المجتمع.

غير أن هذه الحكاية لم تعد مهمة اليوم، لم تعد مواد البناء السيئة مؤثر مهم، بل غاص الكثيرون إلى بُعد جديد، فمع التطور الاقتصادي، و تأمين المساكن خارج المنامة، أصبحت هذه البيوت و أراضيها أماكن ممتازة للكسب المادي، مع غلاء الأراضي، و ارتفاع اقتصاد السوق، فراحوا يحطمون ما تبقى من أبنية قديمة، و أدلة على عمق المنامة، على عمق مجتمعها، على عمق شخوصها، لتصبح هذه الأراضي للبيع أو مشروع تجاري حديث، و هي خطوة في نهاية المرحلة، مرحلة التطور الجديدة، الحلة الجديدة، التي بعدها لن ترى مباني طينية أو ذات هوية خاصة.

In every two decades, Manama recreates its environment. The old buildings have gone. And new meaningless buildings have been the replacement. In such quick changing environment, you won’t see any evidence that approve Manama’s age. Except some old papers and plans -which we will talk about them in the next blogs- that don’t have any real implementation on the ground. In 40’s Manama was all White! With nice blue doors and windows1. This beauty has totally disappear!

I got a chance to talk with my grandfather (Haji Hassan Ali Alhaddad) about this subject, since he was playing a main role in the Blacksmiths Market –One of the important markets in the old Manama City-. He confirmed to me that Manama layout is the same, these street and lanes are the same, and these shops and its lands are the same, since Manama has been founded. But, people were looking for cheap and available materials to construct their houses and shops, which makes them also weak and not bulky enough to stands over time. This theory or fact is so visible in many locations, specially the old houses of Manama’s businessmen, where you can find the best construction materials!

But, this story has been changed! Nowadays the cheap materials are not the main reason behind demolishing the old buildings! There is a new diminution! Land prices in Bahrain and the power of Manama Souq increased, in addition to the local people movement from the city to the newer outer housing projects. All these new reasons makes the rate of losing higher, losing our old Housing and environmental identity.
