Manama, the capital of Bahrain, is a small city that had been founded five centuries ago. Its name was came from the Arabic word “منامة” which means “the place of rest” or “the place of sleeping”. The reasons behind this name are different from source to another, where some people says that it had got this name because it was the location where the Shaikh – the governor- was living 1 “the place where the Shaikh takes rest on”, while others says that it was the first place of Bahrain that the Portuguese had reached and stayed there five centuries ago2 “the place where the Portuguese takes rest on”. However, there is one specific point that all the sources had mentioned, which it’s the importance of Manama as a main center in the region trading movement and the gulf culture development. One of these sources was “Manama in five centuries”, a book of Abdul Karim Al-Orrayed (a professional Bahraini artist). This specific book has a very special type of writing where Al-Orrayed had collected many information from different old sources and combined them with his own memories of Manama.
